chromatophore

A cell, usually found in skin but also elsewhere, that has intricate spider-weblike extensions. When the pigments spread out into the web, the skin darkens, and when the pigments withdraw into the center of the cell, the skin lightens. Most commonly, the pigments are brown (see melanophore), but they also occur in several other colors.
