" In central Mexico, specifically the central plateau and the Balsas basin, 25 invasive exotic fish species are recognized. The introduction of the vast majority of these species has had trade as a main pathway, be - cause of their use for human consumption, sport fishing or as ornamentals. The region is a major production, import and sale center of many of these species. The groups with the largest presence in the region are cichlids and poeciliids, while armoured catfish have caused an enormous impact on aquatic ecosystems in the Balsas basin. Some species are restricted to lakes or reservoirs where they have caused the decrease or elimination of native species "
