" The Pisces Collection at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München" is described under Collections of the Ichthyology Section with details on the history, main focus, type material und current development. It comprises more than 7,700 species in approx. 480 families. Approximately 70% are from Germany, the rest are from more than 20 countries worldwide. There are wet collections (the majority of the 45,000 collection objects = lots), DNA and tissue samples as well as special wet and dried collections of pharyngeal bones, fish scales and teeth.

Data Project and Service

The data project "The Pisces Collection at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München" is managing and processing collection information to more than 28,000 digital units. Some 16,000 of these are now published via various portals, 9,000 are georeferenced and more than 750 with images. The high resolution images are done with the digitalization station described at Digitalisation at the ZSM.

"The Pisces Collection at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München" is work in progress. Data mobilisation was done as part of the DFG funded IDES project with the general aim to make the fish collections of the Staatliche Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen Bayerns accessible via internet through national and international portals. The data project uses Diversity Workbench components, the taxonomy and nomenclature follows the Catalogue of Life. The scientific data curation lead is with Dirk Neumann. Until 2016 data re-organisation, import and digitalisation efforts were mainly done by Andreas Dunz, Christina Laibl, Veronica Sanz and Florian Weller (all temporary staff).

The data project "The Pisces Collection at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München" is maintained and expanded by staff members of the Zoologische Staatssammlung München. Notices of errors of any kind are much appreciated by the editorial staff. Technical support is provided by the IT Center of the Staatliche Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen Bayerns.
