Conservation: Xiphophorus milleri is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (DD) data deficient (2018). Espinoza-Perez ([ref1=1059]) reports that at least in some areas of its range X. milleri is severely threatened by water pollution from agriculture and farming run-off, urban sewage and industrial discharges, increased sedimentation, eutrophication and coliform bacteria. I have observed (2021) X. milleri inhabiting some pristine habitats in streams in the eastern part of Lake Catemaco.
