Original description as Cyprinodon alvarezi:

  • Miller, Robert Rush. 1976. "Four new pupfishes of the genus Cyprinodon from Mexico, with a key to the C. eximius complex". Bulletin of the Southern California Academy of Sciences. 75(2):68-75 (ffm00172)

Conservation: Cyprinodon alvarezi is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (EW) extinct in the wild (2018). Reported extinct in 1994 by Burkhead (2012). I nevertheless was able to see what apparently were the last specimens in March 1996, when the sprigs had been reduced to a few isolated small poodles.
