The Balsas River freshwater ecoregion, FEOW ecoregion 169, is a tropical and subtropical coastal-river ecoregion on the Pacific slope of southern and central Mexico. It includes the Río Balsas basin and neighboring Pacific drainages such as the Río Coalcomán and Río Nexpa. The ecoregion extends from the Pacific coast through central Michoacán and eastern Jalisco, then eastward through northern Guerrero, southern Mexico State, most of Morelos, southern Tlaxcala, southern Puebla, and western Oaxaca.
The Balsas is one of Mexico’s major Pacific-draining river systems. It lies between the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt to the north and the Sierra Madre del Sur to the south, crossing volcanic highlands, intermontane valleys, dry tropical forest, thorn scrub, canyons, and lowland coastal reaches. Important tributary systems include the Atoyac, Mixteco, Tlapaneco, Amacuzac, Cutzamala, Tepalcatepec, and other rivers that eventually join the main Balsas before it reaches the Pacific Ocean.
The ecoregion’s habitats include upland streams, canyon rivers, rocky runs, riffles, pools, springs, warm lowland channels, reservoirs, irrigation canals, floodplain pockets, and estuarine lower reaches. Many tributaries are seasonal, while spring-fed or mountain-fed sections may maintain perennial flow. The basin is heavily used for agriculture, irrigation, urban water supply, and hydropower, and many river sections have been strongly modified by dams, pollution, water extraction, and channel alteration.
The fish fauna is distinctive and includes goodeids, poeciliids, cyprinids, ictalurids, atherinopsids, gobies, sleepers, mullets, estuarine-associated fishes, and cichlids. The Balsas is especially important for endemic Mexican livebearers. Ilyodon whitei, the Balsas splitfin, is one of the characteristic fishes of the basin and is endemic to the Balsas and neighboring Pacific-slope drainages. Other livebearers occur in springs, streams, pools, canyon rivers, and seasonal lowland habitats, with species composition varying strongly by tributary and locality.
Cichlids are native and important in the Balsas River ecoregion, but the native cichlid fauna is limited. The principal native cichlid is Amphilophus istlanus, the Mexican mojarra or Balsas cichlid. It is associated with rivers, streams, pools, rocky margins, sandy areas, and structurally complex habitats, especially in the Balsas drainage and its tributaries, such as the Amacuzac system. It should be treated as the key native cichlid of the ecoregion, not as part of a broad cichlid-rich assemblage comparable to southeastern Mexico or Central America.
Introduced cichlids are a major conservation concern. In parts of the Balsas system, especially the Amacuzac River, Amphilophus istlanus co-occurs with non-native cichlids such as Amatitlania nigrofasciata and tilapiines including Oreochromis mossambicus. Other introduced tilapiines, such as Oreochromis niloticus and Oreochromis aureus, may occur in reservoirs, canals, ponds, irrigation systems, or modified river reaches. These introduced fishes should be treated separately from the native fauna and may affect native fishes through predation, competition, disease, habitat disturbance, or changes in the food web.
The basin’s native fish assemblages vary strongly among headwaters, canyon rivers, tributaries, reservoirs, lowland channels, and estuarine reaches. Locality data are especially important because the upper Balsas, Amacuzac, Cutzamala, Tepalcatepec, Atoyac, Mixteco, Tlapaneco, Coalcomán, and Nexpa systems may contain different combinations of species. For FFM, the Balsas should be treated as a major Mexican Pacific-slope ecoregion with a distinctive endemic fish fauna, especially livebearers, and with Amphilophus istlanus as its principal native cichlid.
Conservation priorities include protecting perennial stream reaches, springs, canyon rivers, refugial pools, riparian vegetation, and water quality. Major threats include water abstraction, dams, reservoirs, irrigation, untreated sewage, industrial pollution, mining impacts, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, riparian deforestation, invasive fishes, parasite introductions, and fragmentation of river habitats. Because many native fishes are restricted to particular tributaries, springs, or river sections, local habitat degradation can have disproportionate effects on the ecoregion’s freshwater biodiversity.
