The Sonora freshwater ecoregion, FEOW ecoregion 160, is a tropical and subtropical coastal-river ecoregion on the Pacific slope of northwestern Mexico. It includes rivers that descend from the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Sonoran uplands toward the Gulf of California. Important systems include the Río Sonora, Río Yaqui, Río Mayo, Río Mátape, Río Sonoyta, Río Concepción, and neighboring coastal drainages. These rivers connect mountain and canyon headwaters with foothills, desert valleys, reservoirs, agricultural districts, coastal wetlands, estuaries, and brackish lower reaches.
The ecoregion is strongly shaped by aridity, seasonal rainfall, mountain runoff, drought, reservoirs, irrigation, groundwater use, and coastal influence. Upper reaches may include clear, cool, rocky mountain streams with pools, riffles, boulders, gravel, and sandy bottoms. The middle and lower reaches are warmer, more seasonal, and more affected by dams, irrigation withdrawals, agricultural return flows, sedimentation, mining impacts, and reduced dry-season flows. Lower river sections may connect with coastal lagoons, marshes, estuaries, mangroves, and brackish habitats.
The fish fauna is characteristic of northwestern Mexican Pacific-slope and desert-margin drainages. It is not a cichlid-rich region like southeastern Mexico or Central America, but it is biogeographically important because it combines the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Sonoran Desert, the Pacific slope, lowland, and coastal elements. Important native groups include cyprinids, catostomids, poeciliids, ictalurids, atherinopsids, gobies, sleepers, mullets, estuarine-associated fishes, and cichlids. The fauna varies strongly by drainage and elevation, so records from the Río Yaqui, Río Mayo, Río Sonora, Río Mátape, Río Sonoyta, or Río Concepción should not be treated as interchangeable without locality evidence.
Cyprinids and suckers are among the most important non-cichlid fishes of the ecoregion, especially in upland streams, tributaries, canyon rivers, spring-fed sections, and flowing river reaches. Species of Agosia, Campostoma, Codoma, Cyprinella, Gila, Rhinichthys, Tiaroga, Yaquiichthys, Catostomus, and related genera may occur in the broader Sonoran and Yaqui-Mayo regional context, depending on drainage and elevation. These fishes form an important part of the Sierra Madre and desert-stream fauna and are often sensitive to flow alteration, sedimentation, pollution, and introduced predators.
The Río Yaqui basin is especially important for native fishes of conservation concern. The Yaqui catfish, Ictalurus pricei, is one of the emblematic species of the region and has a small range in northwestern Mexico and adjacent Arizona, with its distribution and abundance declining. Other Yaqui-associated fishes include cyprinids, suckers, and livebearers that link the Sonora ecoregion with the broader Madrean and desert-river fauna. These species illustrate the importance of protecting tributaries, canyon reaches, perennial pools, and spring-fed refuges rather than focusing only on the large reservoirs and lower channels.
Poeciliids are also important, especially in warm lowland channels, vegetated margins, pools, springs, irrigation-influenced waters, and coastal plain habitats. Species of Poecilia, Poeciliopsis, Gambusia, and related genera may occur in different parts of the ecoregion. The Yaqui topminnow complex, including Poeciliopsis occidentalis forms, is especially relevant in the broader Yaqui context. Livebearers are often tolerant of warm, variable, and disturbed habitats, but their native or introduced status should still be checked carefully by drainage and locality.
Catfishes and other larger freshwater fishes add another important component. Native ictalurids occur in rivers, pools, reservoirs, and larger channels. The Yaqui catfish Ictalurus pricei is particularly important because of its restricted range and conservation status. Other catfish or larger freshwater fishes may occur in reservoirs, lowland channels, or tributaries, but locality and status should be checked carefully, as some records may reflect introductions, stocking, or movement among basins.
Atherinopsids, gobies, sleepers, mullets, and other peripheral or estuarine-associated fishes are especially important in lower river sections and coastal lagoons. These fishes reflect the strong connection between the freshwater ecoregion and the Gulf of California coastal zone. In lower reaches, some species may use fresh, brackish, and coastal habitats during different life stages or seasons. For FFM, these lower-river and estuarine fishes should be treated as part of the ecoregion’s ecological identity, not simply as marine visitors.
Cichlids are native to the Sonoran ecoregion, but the native cichlid fauna is limited. The only native cichlid to emphasize is Mayaheros beani, the green guapote or Sinaloa cichlid. This species represents the northern Pacific Mexican cichlid element and occurs on the Pacific slope of Mexico from Sonora southward to Jalisco. It inhabits freshwater and sometimes brackish habitats and is associated with lower river-valley sections, warm channels, pools, reservoirs, lagoons, and coastal-plain waters.
Taxonomic and locality caution are important. The Sonora ecoregion includes several parallel or semi-independent drainage systems, and nearby rivers may contain different native assemblages. Records from the Río Sonora, Río Yaqui, Río Mayo, Río Mátape, Río Sonoyta, Río Concepción, or smaller coastal drainages should not be merged without locality evidence. This is especially important for localized cyprinids, suckers, poeciliids, catfishes, and peripheral fishes, as well as for evaluating whether a record represents a native population, a translocation, or an introduction.
Introduced fishes should be treated separately from the native fauna. Tilapiines such as Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, and related aquaculture forms may occur in reservoirs, ponds, irrigation canals, aquaculture systems, and modified lowland waters, but they are not part of the native Sonora fish fauna. Oreochromis niloticus has recently been reported from the Río Sonora near Baviácora, where it may represent a threat to native biodiversity in a system already affected by mining pollution. Other non-native fishes, including stocked sport fishes, carps, aquarium releases, or aquaculture escapees, may also affect native species through predation, competition, habitat disturbance, disease, or food-web changes.
Conservation priorities include protecting perennial mountain streams, canyon tributaries, springs, deep pools, riparian vegetation, estuarine connections, coastal wetlands, and water quality. Major threats include dams, reservoir operation, irrigation withdrawals, groundwater depletion, agricultural runoff, pesticide pollution, mining impacts, urban wastewater, sedimentation, riparian degradation, invasive fishes, estuarine alteration, mangrove loss, and reduced dry-season flow. Sonoran rivers are naturally seasonal and water-limited, so additional water extraction or pollution can quickly reduce habitat availability for native fishes.
