The Cuatro Ciénegas freshwater ecoregion, FEOW ecoregion 136, is a xeric, closed-basin freshwater ecoregion in Coahuila, northern Mexico. It is centered on the Cuatro Ciénegas Basin, an isolated desert valley within the Chihuahuan Desert. The ecoregion is famous for its groundwater-fed springs, clear pools or pozas, marshes, canals, spring runs, gypsum-influenced habitats, and desert wetlands. It is surrounded by mountains and is hydrologically isolated, making it one of the most distinctive freshwater systems in Mexico.

Unlike large river ecoregions, Cuatro Ciénegas is dominated by springs and spring-fed wetlands. Its habitats include clear pools, thermal and non-thermal springs, marshes, vegetated channels, canals, slow-flowing spring runs, shallow wetlands, sandy or rocky bottoms, and mineral-rich waters. Water chemistry and habitat structure can vary strongly among nearby pools, so different springs or channels may support different fish assemblages. This fine-scale habitat diversity, combined with long isolation, has produced exceptional endemism.

The fish fauna is small in absolute number but extraordinarily important. FEOW lists several endemic fishes from the ecoregion, including Herichthys minckleyi, historically listed as Cichlasoma minckleyi, Cyprinella xanthicara, Cyprinodon atrorus, Cyprinodon bifasciatus, Gambusia longispinis, Lucania interioris, and Xiphophorus gordoni. Other important regional fishes include Gambusia marshi and Astyanax mexicanus, depending on locality and drainage context. The basin is one of the most important centers of desert freshwater-fish endemism in Mexico.

Cyprinids are represented by the endemic Cuatro Ciénegas shiner, Cyprinella xanthicara, a species tied to spring-fed and flowing-water habitats. Pupfishes are especially characteristic of the basin, with endemic species such as Cyprinodon atrorus and Cyprinodon bifasciatus. These pupfishes illustrate the importance of isolated springs, pools, marshes, and desert wetlands in generating localized fish diversity. The endemic killifish Lucania interioris is another important component of this spring-wetland fauna.

Poeciliids are also central to the fish community. Important species include Gambusia longispinis, Gambusia marshi, and Xiphophorus gordoni. These livebearers occur in springs, marshes, vegetated margins, pools, and slow waters, and some have restricted distributions. Their persistence depends on stable spring flow, good water quality, aquatic vegetation, and protection from introduced species. Because many habitats are small and isolated, even local disturbance can have major effects on native populations.

Cichlids are represented by the endemic Herichthys minckleyi, the Cuatro Ciénegas cichlid or Minckley’s cichlid. It is the defining native cichlid of the ecoregion and should not be confused with Herichthys cyanoguttatus or other northeastern Mexican Herichthys. Older literature may list it as Cichlasoma minckleyi. Herichthys minckleyi is especially important because it is trophically polymorphic: individuals may have different pharyngeal jaw types, including molariform forms with stout crushing teeth and papilliform forms with finer teeth. This polymorphism is linked to feeding ecology and makes the species one of the most remarkable cichlids in Mexico.

The ecological diversity of Herichthys minckleyi is unusual for a single species. It occupies spring pools, marshes, canals, vegetated margins, rocky or sandy areas, and structurally complex aquatic habitats. Different trophic morphs may exploit different food resources, including snails, invertebrates, plant material, detritus, and possibly fishes. For FFM, this species should be treated as one of the most important Mexican cichlids for understanding adaptation, morphology, and evolution in isolated desert waters.

Introduced species are a major threat. Tilapiines such as Oreochromis species, non-native mollusks, crayfishes, and other introduced organisms can affect native fishes through predation, competition, habitat alteration, disease, or food-web disruption. Because many native species are restricted to individual pools, springs, or short spring runs, introduced species can have severe effects in a very small area.

Conservation priorities include protecting groundwater, spring discharge, marshes, pools, canals, water quality, aquatic vegetation, and native fish refuges. Major threats include groundwater extraction, spring-flow reduction, wetland drying, agricultural water use, cattle impacts, pollution, canal modification, invasive species, habitat fragmentation, and climate-driven drought. For FFM, Cuatro Ciénegas should be treated as one of Mexico’s most important freshwater conservation jewels: a small desert basin with exceptional endemism, iconic pupfishes and livebearers, and the remarkable endemic cichlid Herichthys minckleyi.
