Born in Germany in the mid-20th century, Meyer became fascinated with aquatic life at a young age and developed a deep interest in livebearers. His interest in cichlid fishes came later during the “craze” that followed the regular importations from lakes Malawi and Tanganyika to Europe. After he had described several livebearers from Central America, he became interested in describing several Malawi cichlids.
Meyer is perhaps best known for his work on the genus Aulonocara, a group of cichlids found in Lake Malawi. His work in the 1980s led to the publication of eight new species within this genus, including the now-famous Aulonocara baenschi, known for its vibrant colors and importance in the aquarium trade. This species, commonly known as the Nkhomo-benga peacock, was formally described by Meyer and Rüdiger Riehl in 1985, and it has since become one of the iconic species associated with the stunning cichlid diversity of Lake Malawi.
After the controversy between the genus name Maylandia, which Meyer and Foerster published in 1984, and Metriaclima, described in 1997 by Stauffer et al., Meyer lost interest in cichlids and returned to the livebearers. He published a book on livebearers in 2015 in the German language called “Lebendgebärende Zierfische. Bd.1: Poeciliidae.”.
