The Río Conchos freshwater ecoregion, FEOW ecoregion 134, is a northern Mexican desert-river ecoregion centered on the Río Conchos basin in Chihuahua. The Río Conchos is the most important Mexican tributary of the Río Bravo / Rio Grande, draining much of central and southern Chihuahua before joining the Río Bravo near Ojinaga, opposite Presidio, Texas. Although the user-facing number may differ in local databases, FEOW identifies this ecoregion as Río Conchos and treats it as a distinct unit within the broader Río Bravo region.

The ecoregion lies mostly within the Chihuahuan Desert and adjacent Sierra Madre Occidental foothills and highlands. Its habitats include mountain creeks, spring runs, desert streams, pools, riffles, runs, marshes, larger river channels, reservoirs, irrigation canals, drainage ditches, and modified lowland reaches. Flow is strongly influenced by mountain runoff, seasonal rainfall, groundwater, springs, drought, dams, reservoirs, and irrigation. Permanent aquatic habitats are often limited and fragmented, making springs, perennial stream sections, and refuge pools especially important for native fishes.

The fish fauna is highly distinctive and includes cyprinids, pupfishes, livebearers, darters, suckers, catfishes, sunfishes, killifishes, and other Río Bravo or Chihuahuan Desert-associated fishes. FEOW notes that roughly one-third of the native fishes of the Río Conchos ecoregion are endemic. Strict endemics include Cyprinella panarcys, Cyprinodon macrolepis, Cyprinodon pachycephalus, Cyprinodon salvadori, Etheostoma australe, Etheostoma pottsii, Gambusia alvarezi, and Gambusia hurtadoi. These species illustrate the importance of the Conchos as a major center of desert freshwater endemism in northern Mexico.

Cyprinids are important in flowing streams, spring runs, tributaries, and larger river channels. Cyprinella panarcys, the Conchos shiner, is one of the characteristic endemic fishes of the ecoregion. Pupfishes are especially significant in springs, headwaters, and desert aquatic refuges. Endemic species such as Cyprinodon macrolepis, Cyprinodon pachycephalus, and Cyprinodon salvadori show how isolated aquatic habitats in the basin have produced localized species. Livebearers such as Gambusia alvarezi and Gambusia hurtadoi are also important and may occur in springs, marshes, slow margins, pools, or vegetated habitats.

Darters add another important element to the fauna. Etheostoma australe, the Conchos darter, and Etheostoma pottsii, the Chihuahua darter, are endemic to the ecoregion and are associated with flowing-water habitats. Their presence emphasizes that the Conchos is not only a desert-pool system, but also includes riffles, runs, gravelly reaches, and stream habitats that support specialized benthic fishes. These habitats are vulnerable to sedimentation, reduced flow, channel alteration, and water-quality decline.

Introduced cichlids, especially tilapiines such as Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis aureus, and Oreochromis mossambicus, may occur in reservoirs, canals, ponds, aquaculture systems, or modified waters, but they should be treated separately from the native fauna. Other introduced fishes may also threaten native species through predation, competition, disease, hybridization in some groups, or habitat disturbance. These impacts can be especially serious in desert systems where native fishes often survive in small, isolated, or spring-fed refuges.

Locality data are essential in this ecoregion. Upper tributaries, spring systems, the Río Florido, Río San Pedro, Río Chuviscar, Río Nonoava, Río Balleza, Río Parral, lower Río Conchos reaches, reservoirs, and irrigation drains may contain different assemblages and different conservation problems. Many native species have restricted ranges, and some are tied to particular springs, tributaries, or flow conditions.

Conservation priorities include protecting springs, groundwater, perennial stream reaches, riffles, refuge pools, marshes, riparian vegetation, and water quality. Major threats include groundwater depletion, water extraction, spring modification, dams, reservoirs, irrigation withdrawals, salinization, agricultural runoff, sewage, mining impacts, sedimentation, invasive fishes, drought, and climate-driven reductions in flow. For FFM, the Río Conchos should be treated as one of Mexico’s most important northern desert-fish ecoregions, notable for endemic pupfishes, livebearers, darters, and cyprinids rather than for cichlid diversity.
