The Sinaloa freshwater ecoregion, FEOW ecoregion 162, is a tropical and subtropical coastal-river ecoregion on the Pacific slope of northwestern Mexico. It includes rivers descending from the Sierra Madre Occidental toward the Gulf of California and the Pacific coastal plain. Important systems include the Río Fuerte, Río Sinaloa, Río Mocorito, Río Culiacán, Río San Lorenzo, Río Elota, Río Piaxtla, Río Presidio, Río Baluarte, and smaller coastal drainages. These rivers connect mountain and canyon headwaters with foothills, agricultural valleys, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangroves, and brackish lower reaches.
The ecoregion is strongly shaped by seasonality. Upper reaches may include clear mountain streams, canyon rivers, rocky runs, riffles, pools, and spring-fed sections, while middle and lower reaches are warmer, broader, more turbid, and often strongly affected by reservoirs, irrigation withdrawals, agriculture, and sedimentation. Lower basins include estuarine mouths, coastal lagoons, marshes, mangrove margins, and brackish habitats. In many rivers, dry-season flow is reduced or fragmented, while wet-season floods reconnect channels, floodplains, and lowland habitats.
The fish fauna is characteristic of northwestern Mexican Pacific-slope drainages. It is not as cichlid-rich as the faunas of southern Mexico or Central America, but it is biogeographically important because it combines Sierra Madre Occidental, Pacific-slope, lowland, and coastal elements. Important native groups include cyprinids, poeciliids, ictalurids, atherinopsids, gobies, sleepers, mullets, estuarine-associated fishes, and cichlids. The fauna varies strongly by drainage and elevation, so records from the Río Fuerte, Río Sinaloa, Río Culiacán, Río Presidio, or Río Baluarte should not be treated as interchangeable without locality evidence.
Cyprinids are among the important native fishes of the ecoregion, especially in upland streams, tributaries, canyon rivers, and flowing river sections. Species of Agosia, Algansea, Campostoma, Codoma, Cyprinella, Gila, and related genera may occur in the broader northwestern Mexican context, depending on drainage and elevation. These fishes form part of the Sierra Madre and Pacific-slope stream fauna and are often sensitive to flow alteration, sedimentation, pollution, and introduced predators.
Poeciliids are also important, especially in warm lowland channels, vegetated margins, pools, irrigation-influenced waters, and coastal plain habitats. Species of Poecilia, Poeciliopsis, Gambusia, and related genera may occur in different parts of the ecoregion. These livebearers are often tolerant of warm, variable, and disturbed habitats, but their native or introduced status should still be checked carefully by drainage and locality. They are especially relevant in lowland reaches, reservoirs, ditches, lagoons, and seasonally connected habitats.
Catfishes and other larger freshwater fishes add another important component. Native ictalurids occur in rivers, pools, reservoirs, and larger channels, while other freshwater fishes use upland streams, lowland channels, and modified waters depending on local conditions. The Río Fuerte and other major Sinaloan drainages connect high mountain catchments with lowland valleys, so fish assemblages may differ greatly between headwaters, canyon sections, reservoirs, and coastal reaches.
Atherinopsids, gobies, sleepers, mullets, and other peripheral or estuarine-associated fishes are especially important in lower river sections and coastal lagoons. These fishes reflect the strong connection between the freshwater ecoregion and the Gulf of California coastal zone. In lower reaches, some species may use fresh, brackish, and coastal habitats during different life stages or seasons. For FFM, these lower-river and estuarine fishes should be treated as part of the ecoregion’s ecological identity, not simply as marine visitors.
Cichlids are native to the Sinaloa ecoregion, but the native cichlid fauna is limited. The only native cichlid to emphasize is Mayaheros beani, the green guapote or Sinaloa cichlid. This species represents the northern Pacific Mexican cichlid element and is native to the Pacific slope of Mexico. It occurs in freshwater and sometimes brackish habitats, including rivers, streams, pools, reservoirs, lowland channels, lagoons, and warm coastal-plain waters.
The presence of Mayaheros beani does not make the Sinaloa ecoregion cichlid-rich, comparable to the Grijalva-Usumacinta, Papaloapan, or Central American Caribbean-slope systems. Instead, it represents a single large, adaptable native cichlid within a broader northwestern Mexican river fauna dominated by cyprinids, poeciliids, catfishes, atherinopsids, and coastal-associated fishes.
Introduced fishes should be treated separately from the native fauna. Tilapiines such as Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, and related aquaculture forms may occur in reservoirs, ponds, irrigation canals, aquaculture systems, and modified lowland waters, but they are not part of the native Sinaloa fish fauna. Other non-native fishes, including carps, stocked sport fishes, aquarium releases, or aquaculture escapees, may also affect native species through predation, competition, habitat disturbance, disease, or changes in the food web.
Conservation priorities include protecting perennial river reaches, canyon tributaries, springs, riparian vegetation, reservoirs with native refuges, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangroves, and water quality. Major threats include dams, reservoir operation, irrigation withdrawals, agricultural runoff, pesticide pollution, urban wastewater, mining impacts in some headwaters, sedimentation, riparian degradation, invasive fishes, estuarine alteration, mangrove loss, and reduced dry-season flow. Because many Sinaloan rivers are heavily used for irrigation and agriculture, maintaining clean tributaries and perennial refuges is essential for the conservation of native fish.
