Little-known cichlids of the Pacific Slope of Mexico

Abstract:

" This article provides an overview of the native cichlid species inhabiting Mexico’s Pacific slope. It contrasts their diversity and ecology with the better-known Atlantic forms and describes six native species—Mayaheros beani, Amphilophus istlanus, Amphilophus trimaculatus, Astatheros macracanthus, Vieja zonata, and Vieja guttulata—highlighting their habitats, feeding and breeding behaviors, and suitability for aquarists. The paper also discusses non-native introductions such as tilapias and Amatitlania nigrofasciata and their ecological effects. It concludes by emphasizing the beauty, behavior, and challenges these robust and rarely kept cichlids present to experienced hobbyists. "
