Abstract:

" Albert Günther’s landmark account of the fishes of Central America brings together the results of extensive collections made by Captain John M. Dow, Frederick Godman, and Osbert Salvin across Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, and neighboring regions. Combining natural history, taxonomy, geography, and field observations, the work offers one of the earliest broad scientific treatments of the region’s freshwater, brackish, and marine fish fauna.

The memoir is especially important for the history of Central American ichthyology. It records numerous species that were new to science, provides original descriptions and illustrations, and documents fishes from lakes, rivers, coastal lagoons, reefs, and both sides of the Central American isthmus.
