Abstract:

" The article provides a comprehensive overview of Xiphophorus birchmanni, the Sheepshead swordtail, a distinctive livebearer from northeastern Mexico. It synthesizes information on the species’ distribution, habitat, ecology, natural history, aquarium maintenance, and taxonomic history. Special attention is given to its adaptation to fast-flowing rocky streams, its social and reproductive behavior, and its unusual position among swordtails because of the near absence of a sword. The article also emphasizes the species’ importance in studies of communication, mate choice, environmental disruption, and natural hybridization with related species such as Xiphophorus malinche and Xiphophorus cortezi.
