Abstract:
" This monograph delivers a comprehensive taxonomic revision of Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae), integrating morphology, distribution, behavior, and experimental hybrid data to reassess species limits among platyfishes and swordtails. The study prioritizes three primary diagnostic character sets—bony elements at the tip of the male gonopodium, pigment patterns (including melanophore arrangements), and the presence/extent of the caudal “sword”—while treating additional skeletal and meristic traits as secondary or supra‑specific indicators. Findings from 47 types of laboratory-produced interspecific hybrids (e.g., sterility, embryonic lethality, endocrine imbalance, pigment cell anomalies, and gonopodial defects) are used as systematic criteria to gauge genetic relatedness and corroborate morphological hypotheses. The revision recognizes eight species and eleven subspecies, including the new species X. milleri and new subspecies X. variatus evelynae, X. montezumae cortezi, X. pygmaeus nigrensis, and X. helleri alvarezi, alongside reappraised taxa such as X. couchianus, X. maculatus, X. variatus, X. montezumae, X. pygmaeus, X. clemenciae, and X. helleri. Species are organized into three groups—maculatus, montezumae, and helleri—reflecting shared character complexes and biogeographic patterns. The work also synthesizes distribution, habitat preferences, ecological constraints, and dispersal routes, and provides meristic notes and an identification key, offering a durable framework for taxonomy and comparative biology of Xiphophorus.
