Abstract:
" This nineteenth-century account by Albert Günther summarizes an extensive investigation of the fishes of Central America based on specimens collected by Osbert Salvin, Frederick Godman, and Captain John M. Dow. Covering freshwater and marine environments on both sides of the isthmus, the work reflects an important stage in the scientific exploration of the region’s remarkable fish diversity and in the development of modern biogeographic ideas.
Günther places particular emphasis on the relationship between the Atlantic and Pacific faunas, using the occurrence of closely shared marine forms to consider the geological history of Central America. The excerpt also introduces and diagnoses numerous fishes regarded as new at the time, including several cichlids that later became familiar to researchers and aquarists. Among these are species now recognized as Amatitlania nigrofasciata, Rocio octofasciata, Cribroheros longimanus, Amphilophus labiatus, Parachromis managuensis, and Vieja melanurus, as well as the newly proposed genus Neetroplus.
Beyond its taxonomic significance, the work reveals how nineteenth-century ichthyologists interpreted regional diversity through comparative anatomy, museum collections, and field material. It remains valuable for understanding the original scientific recognition of many Central American fishes, the historical foundations of cichlid classification, and early attempts to connect biological distributions with the geological past of the isthmus.
