" This richly illustrated profile explores Vieja zonata, the striking Oaxaca cichlid of southern Mexico’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Drawing on extensive field observations and aquarium experience, the author examines the species’ distribution, varied river habitats, natural behavior, feeding, reproduction, and care in captivity. The article also unravels the long-standing confusion surrounding its identity, range, and relationship to similar members of the genus Vieja. Particular attention is given to its shy nature in the wild, dramatic breeding coloration, parental care, and the challenges posed by its size and aggression in aquariums.
