Original description as Gobiesox mexicanus:

  • Briggs, John C & Robert R. Miller. 1960. "Two new freshwater clingfishes of the genus Gobiesox from southern Mexico". Occasional Papers of the Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan. (616):1-15 (ffm00388)

Conservation: Gobiesox mexicanus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2018). Gobiesox mexicanus faces a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its natural habitat as a result of overextraction of water resources for agricultural irrigation, industrial and urban uses across its range (Schmitter-Soto, 2019).
