Conservation: Xiphophorus couchianus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (EW) extinct in the wild (2018). The species was lost by habitat loss and degradation caused by urban encroachment, sewage pollution, desiccation of the natural springs and competition and predation from introduced invasive alien species (Ceballos et al., 2016). Ojo de Agua de Apodaca has been transformed into an urban recreational pool and the remaining population there has been lost.
